Upcoming CDs and its reviews

Note to all of you: There are times where I will not get to all of the CDs on a list that are with each blog. I am sorry but I am a busy person who is trying to find another job. At this moment, Cerritos College is reaching the end of its semester. In any event, here are the CDs that I will review before the end of 2007...Wu Tang Clan, is back with its offering.

Mary J. Blige has an import CD coming out. As for what this is about I will find out. But I love the album cover of it.

Celine Dion just performed on ABC's Dancing with the Stars" after it was revealing who was Season 5 winner...driver Helio Castroneves. As she prepares to close her show in Las Vegas in December Dion offers what fans want to see, and those who were unable to go to Sin City.

Queen Latifah does the 'Poetry Man'

Queen Latifah who spent the first nine years turning the hip hop scene into her own has done that with acting and her Oscar-nominated turn in the musical "Chicago" has returned with the song, "Poetry Man" from her album Trav'lin' Light (Verve Records). Although the album has sold to date only has sold just more than 150,000 copies since its release two months ago.

You make me laugh
Cause your eyes they light the night
They look right through me
You bashful boy
You're hiding something sweet
Please give it to me yeah, to me

Talk to me some more
You don't have to go
You're the Poetry Man
You make things all rhyme

Latifah, born Dana Elaine Owens made her debut with the feminist anthem single, "Ladies First," yet, still has triggered interested in her acting ability. Being the second artist to be nominated for an Academy Award (the other is Will Smith) Latifah presents within the song itself is the testament to her ability to focus on what's real. It is subtle.

Alvin and the Chipmunks return to the big screen

The No. 1 children's act of all time is back! Alvin and the Chipmunks pick up right where they left off, with the soundtrack to the new FOX film.

The group consists of three singing chipmunks: Alvin, the mischievous troublemaker, who quickly became the star of the group, Simon, the tall bespectacled intellectual, and Theodore, the chubby, impressionable sweetheart.

1. Funky Town
2. Witch Doctor
3. Get Munk'd
4. Mess Around
5. Come Get What You Want
6. Coast 2 Coast
7. Christmas Song "OG Version"
8. We Roll
9. Get You Goin'
10. Only You
11. Christmas Song "New Version"
12. Follow Me (New Song)
13. Christmas Song "Original Version"
14. Witch Doctor "Original Version"

The trio is "managed" by its human "father" and confidant, David Seville who is played by Jason Lee in the film.

The music on the album is prominently featured throughout the film as the Chipmunks navigate the perils of the music industry and fame. In addition to classic versions of their top tunes ("Witch Doctor" and the "Christmas Song"). These new songs update the chipmunks sound and are sure to appeal not only to kids but to mom, dad, grandma and grandpa - who all grew up with Alvin, Simon and Theodore!

As a kid growing up I remember just sitting and waiting for the cartoon to begin and from the sound of the film track there hasn't been a change in the way in which that one fell in love with the trio. More than anything people fell for them for the way they were able to create its sound and voice the song into their own.

No matter how old one gets there is that nostalgia that all can say Alvin and the Chipmunks are as cool as ever. That Alvin, Simon and Theodore! Gotta love them!

Aaaalllllllvvvvvin!!!

Interview...

Season 6 "American Idol's" Jordin Sparks

The debut of "American Idol's" Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks' self-titled album Jordin Sparks (Jive Records)is coming and from the first listen of it there is a growing period that Sparks is going through.

With the domination of reality television shows hitting the airwaves faster than people can pull its eyes at. How many more reality shows can there be to figures out who will be the next star. Oh, I forgot that FOX show The Next Great American Band. But more than anything what Idol has done for Sparks and those before her is create the platform that says that they can sing, and Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson are a testament to that, and Season 6's winner is just a growing list to that. Sparks stays sweet.

Having already been the youngest winner of the singing competition at age 17, Sparks can sure hit it up on the vocals that are displayed that you would think that she had a shot at being Clarkson. However, this is more of Clarkson minus that spark. But nonetheless Sparks more stand out song is "Next To You":

Maybe we're friends, maybe we're more
Maybe it's just my imagination
But I see you stare just a little too long
And it makes me start to wonder
So baby, call me crazy
But I think you feel it too
Maybe I, Maybe I, just gotta get next to you
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Of course there is also the outstanding ballad, "This Is My Now":

There was a time when I was so afraid.
I thought I'd reached the end,
But baby that was then
I am made of more than my yesterdays.

This is my now, and I am breathing in the moment.
As I look around
I can't believe the love I see.
My fears behind me, gone are the shadows and doubt
That was then, this is my now.

This album is just a start to someone is able to be herself...

Eddie Vedder hits the 'Hard Sun' from Into the Wild

The Sean Penn directed-film "Into the Wild" was totally amazing and with the accompanying voice of Pearl Jam's front man Eddie Vedder. This is a turn for Vedder with throughout the song, he is soulful and yet, does a great job in describing the travel of Chris McCandless who travelled to Alaska, yet died at the age of 24 after having given away his life savings. The feeling throughout the song, "Hard Sun" is that of a man who was trying to find his way into a world that was and is full of unexpected changes and reflections.

Vedder, who, throughout the lyrics is able to describe the trials and tribulations of the 24 years old traveler:

When I walk beside her
I am the better man
when i look to leave her
I always stagger back again

Once I built an ivory tower
so I could worship from above
when I climb down to be set free
she took me in again

CHORUS
There’s a big
a big hard sun
beating on the big people
in the big hard world

One would think that Vedder is in the situation, much less the person who is listening to the song. It takes the audience into the life and yet philosophical world of someone who was going to let his family tie him down by the rules; which, is something that McCandless was determined to do.

Also, it showed that McCandless was fearless in his "Alaskan adventure" throughout the voice of Vedder:

Once I stood to lose her
and I saw what i had done
bowed down and threw away the hours
of her garden and her sun

So I tried to want her
I turned to see her weep
40 days and 40 nights
and its still coming down on me

Menzel takes her 'Brave' turn in song

Rent star Indina Menzel has released the first single from her upcoming album "I Stand" (Warner Bros. Records) titled, "Brave" and yes, it is the title of Jennifer Lopez's latest album.

Menzel, who is married to fellow Rent star Taye Diggs shows range with this song. The first time that she was heard and really noticed was with the famous musical based on Puccini La Boheme but more than anything what makes her appealing is she ability to control her voice.

What does that mean. Like with any artist the limits of your voice is important and being able to put emotion into a song is also important and that transcends through the lyrics of "Brave":

I don't know just where i'm going
and tomorrow it's a little overwhelming
and the air is cold and i'm not the same anymore
I've been running in your direction for too long now
I've lost my own reflection
and I can't look down if you're not there to catch me when I fall

If this is the moment I stand here on my own
If this is my right of passage that somehow leads me home
I might be afraid but it's my turn to be brave
If this is the last chance before we say goodbye
at least it's the first day of the rest of my life
I can't be afraid 'cause it's my turn to be brave

Menzel, who stars in the upcoming movie, "Enchanted" has the ability to have a long-standing career is ability to put emphasizes on the song that she sings. Like she has before with the Rent song, of "Take Me or Leave Me" (my personal favorite) Menzel moment of silence reflection is within the content of the song. Just too bad that fans of Menzel have to wait until her third solo album, "I Stand", is due Jan. 29, 2008. It will include new tracks such as "Brave", "I Stand", and "Gorgeous".

Spice Girls cast a 'Voodoo' and a 'Headline'

The Spice Girls who will embark on its world tour in December have released its new material and the songs, "Voodoo" and "Headline (Friendship Never Ends)" from its Greatest Hits CD (Import) that is currently available at Victoria Secret department stores and will be released worldwide next year. For "Voodoo" the sound is back to the disco era. I was trying to find a video for this song, but this is only the beginning of what could be a good hit package.

cos The fever's gonna get you yeah yeah

Get up and use your voodoo
you know you want it bad
you wanna lead the way yeah you do
Be the best you know you can
Get up and use your voodoo
Get your booty to the floor
You gatta line 'em up left, right don't stop
And leave 'em wanting more
Hey ey party la
Hey ey party la

Shake up the dance floor
you got perfection
Get up and use it
Positively

Melanie C (whom I think) has sound great throughout the song. The others follow into the pattern of great music and lyrics.

Rating: 4 out of 5

As for the single, "Headline (Friendship Never Ends)" it is the type of song that created the hysteria the first time this five woman (whom, I refer to as Spice Women) but more than anything it is great to see all of them together:

Let's make the headlines true this time
There's no hiding from this magical state of mind

If I lost my way, you would carry me home
Take me all the way to Heaven, never leave me alone
And it's just like everything matters when you are near

Let's make the headlines loud and true
Let's make the headlines

Yet, that is not to say the Spice Girls can hold its own. They do.

The only down side is that the women didn't have enough material to extend to another verse. That would have helped the song more than anything but they were struck and tried to find the fit to make it almost (3:56 to be exactly) a four mintue song.

Dion takes her 'Chances'

As her Las Vegas show, "A New Day" draws to a close in mid-December songbird Celine Dion returns for the first time in three years with a new album titled, Taking Chances (Sony Records) and the fact that fans will have the opportunity for extra footage of the show is only the beginning.

I have always considered Dion a strong voiced-carried artist, and that was evident when she debuted in 1992. However, what I question is, is if she is always stuck in the same pattern as the Backstreet Boys. But that is not to say that everything is bad with the album. I have always look toward creativity, risk, and balance within every artist. And that also includes reasons why an album is made the way it is.

Disc: 1
1. Taking Chances
2. Alone
3. Eyes On Me
4. My Love
5. Shadow Of Love
6. Surprise Surprise
7. This Time
8. New Dawn
9. A Song For You
10. A World To Believe In
11. Can't Fight The Feeling
12. I Got Nothing Left
13. Right Next To The Right One
14. Just Fade Away
15. That's Just The Woman In Me
16. Skies Of L.A.
Disc: 2
1. The Power Of Love
2. I Drove All Night
3. I Surrender
4. I Wish
5. A New Day (All Access)

I don't think Dion's strongest quality is finding that reason why, it is more of her voice...that range near the top, (yet, Mariah Carey she isn't) but like the song, "My Heart Will Go On" that totally changed the dynamics of her being that singer who can move a crowd. That happens in parts with this album.
